Halloween season resonates ghoulish costumes, monster faces, candles and candy are all the sign of Halloween is upon us. The origin of Halloween lanterns or pumpkins known as jack-o'-lanterns  came from Ireland. Irish immigrants introduced the lanterns or (pumpkin faces tradition) to America, home of the pumpkin, and it had became the mascot of Halloween ever since.

The ghoulish pumpkin faces turnips or potatoes, represent the story of the jack-o'-lantern, Stingy Jack or Jack the lad.

jack-o’-lanterns have been around for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish tale was about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack or Jack the Lad”

Rumour has it that Jack, invoked the devil at a cross roads on the eve of Halloween, to have a drink with him in a pub. After they had a few, Jack convinced the devil to turn himself into a piece of silver to pay for the drinks in return for his soul. The devil seeing this as a great bargain transformed in to a gold coin. Jack then placed the coin in his pocket with a crucifix trapping the devil, who was unable to morph back in to his dragon form.

Jack being terrified of the devils wrath desperately made a deal to free the Devil, providing he would not bother Jack for one year or claim his soul upon Jacks death. The following Halloween Jack invoked the devil again at the crossroads, on this occasion he tricked the Devil into climbing a tree to pick an apple. While he was up in the tree, Jack placed his crucifix from his pocket on the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Jack died two months after on New Year’s Eve, Irish folklore say that God was upset with him. Because he conversed with the devil, God also banished him from heaven, the fact he cheated the devil twice he was also banished from hell, However the devil gave him a eternal burning coal, that Jack placed in a lantern made of potato with a scary face to keep away the Demons that will eternally chase Jack and can only walk Earth only at night. Myth has it that Jack can only been seen by humans on Halloween running with his lamp while being chased by the darkest monsters of Hell.
